AppDirect was created five years ago to enable the burgeoning app ecosystem for business. In fact, now many of the world’s most popular app stores are assembled and operated by AppDirect. Today the company provides app distribution services to over 20 million businesses around the world, up from just 12 million a year and a half ago.

AppDirect Thursday said it is extending that marketplace and management platform to mobile devices. “What we’ve done with our mobile capability makes businesses of all sizes able to buy the apps they want, and essentially an IT administrator can provide access to these apps across any device,” [company co-CEO Daniel] Saks said.

[AppDirect] works with channel partners, such as large telecommunications companies, hosting providers and retailers, including Comcast, Deutsche Telekom, Rackspace and Staples. It then white labels app stores for them to offer apps to their business customers. Previously those apps were only accessible via the Web, but now those capabilities are also being extended to mobile devices, it was announced on Thursday.

AppDirect has amassed significant traction, not surprisingly given the fact that no one’s core business is the plumbing behind the creation of an application marketplace – in an effort to quickly stand up a customer facing app store, getting the infrastructure provided by a third party makes total sense.

Fresh off of raising a $35 million round from Mithril and Peter Thiel, as well as iNovia Capital, and the Foundry Group, AppDirect is a marketplace for cloud service and software providers that aims to make it easy for business to buy and manage their cloud services. They have reached about 20 million businesses spread over 150 countries. Their success has led to Forbes naming them one of the most promising companies for 2014. Now they’re coming back to Montreal, a city where they first got their startup instincts.

Installing software-as-a-service enterprise apps may never get as simple as installing an app on your personal smartphone, but it’s getting closer. $35 million closer, in fact. AppDirect, a cloud service marketplace that aggregates hundreds of SaaS apps into a single platform that can be sold by independent consultants around the globe, announced this morning that it has raised $35 million led by Peter Thiel’s Mithril Capital.
